Having been born in a family where music was just as indispensable as oxygen or food, the inclination towards the arts for Joel was quite natural. Furthermore, having studied in Patha Bhavan, Kolkata for twelve years, the nurturing was just about perfect for him to enter the realm of music.
 
Originally trained in Western Classical guitar (Grade-8), which he believes to have paved the way for his outlook towards music and his acceptance of the diverse musical genres in the future. Though performing from a very early age, it was only after his Graduation, (Eng Hons.) from Maulana Azad College, Kolkata that he realized his true calling. However he decided not to be confined to just guitar playing but broaden the field and in no time he was writing songs, singing, composing, arranging them and also took a keen interest into the technicalities of music production.
