THE BEGINNING:

Two college friends, with a similar taste in music, decided to have fun while jamming together. Deep on the drums and Bibek on the bass never thought that they would play in a band until they met Soumyabir (pittu) through common friends. Thus the idea of starting a band took form in their mind and they started to look for a vocalist. Fortunately, their search was short as they met Kunzang in a concert. Thus the band was formed - Deeptaroop on the drums, Bibek on the bass, Soumabir on the guitar and Kunzang provided the power vox they needed.

Initially they thought of covering Marilyn Manson, Megadeth and Cranberries. But their point of focus changed when Bibek came up with an innovative and melodic bass lines. They all started channeling their compositions towards the sound of melodic death metal with a raw black feel in the music. Getting influenced by bands like Barzum, Satyricon, Kreator, Obituary, Slayer and All Shall Perish, As I Lay Dying, All That Remains etc the bands developed a unique sound. Their compositions portrayed a melodic picture with a black feeling. A few months later the band decided 2 take in Deep’s friend Ishan as another guitarist so as to fuse genres and add punch to the music.

THE NAME:

The band enrolled itself for participation in the Local competition for college and school bands, Scholastic Beats in 2008. Before they could register they needed a name and Soumyabir came up with the name “Sinful Oath”. The name appealed to all the band members as it was apt with the music they do. As the band was set out to put forth a genre that had never been done in the city before the name Sinful Oath spoke out their story.

INFLUENCES:

The music Sinful Oath does is largely influenced by bands like: All shall perish, Amon Amorth, Burzum, Behemoth, Satyricon, Arch Enemy, Kreator, Necrophagist and many more. Though they have been influenced by these bands they try to keep their compositions very original and exclusive.


PLAYLIST:

They have composed songs that are noticeable even to people who are not metal lovers and hence the appeal of the songs can be made out. They cover Satyricon and Kreators songs and also plan to cover bands falling under the same genre which other local bands don’t usually cover.

1st PERFORMANCE – 5th September, 2008 [at a local competitions of school and college level bands and they qualified for the top 5 after competing with 36 bands.]


MEMBERS:

Deeptaroop Basu

This 19 year old guy is the drummer of the bands. Playing for about one and half year, have one for the fastest legs in the town, specializes in intense double bass playing and double bass techniques. He takes all the major decisions relating the bands. He personally started listening to band music since he was in high school and is largely influenced by bands like All Shall Perish, Lamb of God, Necrophagist, Kreator, Aborted, Satyricon, Slayer, Megadeth, As I Lay Dying and many more. He also played for a rock and roll project called “Screwed”. He has won the best instrumentalist in some of the local band competitions.

Bibek Datta

Bibek is Deep’s college mate, almost of the same age as Deeptaroop. He is the most experienced member of the band. He has been playing bass for quite some time as he played for a band called “Oasis” in his home town, Jolpaiguri. He came to Kolkata to pursue his bachelor’s degree. His main influences were GnR, Iron Maiden, Angra, Dream Theatre, Kalmah, Norther, Kreator, Silencer and some melodic metal bands.
       

Soumyabir Bose

Soumyabir Bose well known as Pittu is the guitarist of the band. His playing includes super fast riffing with hint of thrash parts in them. His main influences are Silencer, Burzum, Satyricon, Obituary, Amon Amarth, Slayer, Kreator, Napalm Death, Behemoth and he listen to a lot of black metal bands. Moreover he is the most insane looking guy in the band. With a lot of piercing in his ears and lips and tattoos on his body, he grabs attention of people everywhere.

Kunzang D. Bhutia

This guy from north-east West Bengal is the vocalist of the band. He came to Kolkata to complete his bachelor’s degree and ended up singing for the band. His vocal parts include high pitch screams and growls. He tries to follow the vocal tone of Dani Filth, the frontman of the balckmetal band Cradle of Filth.  He also likes experimenting and implementing various kinds of screams and growls in the songs. His vocals parts add to the dark feel of the songs of the band. His main influences include musicians and bands of all kinds of genre, from Kurt Cobain of Nirvana to Dani Filth of Cradle of Filth.

Ishan Mukherjee

Ishan is the newest member of the band. His 1st show with the band was in Bangalore in an event called Rockathon 24/7 [100 hrs. of live music]. He likes playing more of jazz and blues and plans to add a new taste to the bands sound. His main influences were all the guitar gods of all times. He likes to implements neo-classical and Indian classical elements in his playing.

MOTIVE and ACHIEVEMENTS:

Sinful Oath’s main motive is to promote the genre METAL in the country. Thus they have been performing any where possible. They have also won a few local competitions. The band focuses on doing music with which the listeners can relate to all the pain and depressive feeling they go through in their daily life. The lyric of their original compositions strongly highlights the sorrows and miseries of particular immaterial objects such as DEAD WISH and SUICIDE ALLEY. Therefore their lyrics are based on a different philosophy and their sound steadily gets into the listeners’ mind.

They have also performed in Kolkata's 1st ever full metal concert with 5 other metal bands called THE PIT. The event was a grand success and was featured on one of India’s esteemed music magazine called the Rock Street Journal, March issue, 2009.

The band recently performed at, a 100 hrs long event in Bangalore. Sinful Oath was the only band representing Kolkata. Big bands from all over India performed in the event. The event was altogether a record setting act for the longest live music event in ASIA ever. Sinful Oath feels proud to be a part of India’s Music History.
