David & Rob met back in 2002 making tea at London's Olympic studios where they both worked as assistant engineers. Working 100-hour weeks with a love of Michael Jackson, they spent every spare minute writing songs, breaking expensive guitars and trying to work out why it was so hard to make things sound good! Thus a great friendship was born...
Let’s hear the story from ‘The Slips’ …
Armed with our trusty sleeping bags, we travelled many a night bus, couriering ourselves to every studio in London, working as freelance engineers. Over the years we tinkered together on our own little project until 2007, when we threw some songs on myspace, and were promptly offered a gig! Bonjour The Slips!
For a while our little side project was simply a way of relieving the frustrations of working in the mainstream music industry. But when we sent our tracks to some people we thought may enjoy them, we were delighted to recruit some exciting fans - French producer extraordinaire Mirwais, Ed Banger's Vicarious Bliss, Radio One's Rob da Bank and Brazilian band de jour CSS - who gave us our first ever remix.
We formed a label called Lucky Egg, inspired by our favourite film Cool Runnings, bought a turtle for the studio and released a single with LA-based label IAMSOUND. We were privileged to be a part of their singles club alongside Little Boots, Florence and the Machine and The Black Ghosts, and with a newfound confidence released our own single, Superbeat, in late 2008.
As we grew braver, our live shows became stronger; we added 8-bit retro visuals, Nintendo Wii controllers and a third member - Ian, our drummer. Then they let us play Glastonbury!
Come and see us play this summer at a festival or two, or join us at our monthly residency at London's Cafe 1001 in Brick Lane
